Social Life and Travel

When you join a club you not only become part of a team you also have the opportunity to make friends with others who also enjoy keeping fit and being active in all sorts of different ways.

Every year the club will organise several major social events which all club members should try to attend. The more that join in the more fun we have. Some examples of these events in the past have been progressive dinners with a dress up theme, ten pin bowling, archery, lawn bowls, movie nights, dinner dances …. Only limited by the imagination!

Added to this are lots of other informal social occasions. Every few weeks we look for an excuse to go out to dinner after training on a Thursday night. Once a month the ‘Morning Crew’ has morning tea after training. During the summer months there is always a group having breakfast after beach training on a Saturday morning.

Masters Swimming can give you the opportunity to travel nationally and internationally. Every year the National Masters Swim is staged in a different state. Every 2 years there is a World Masters Swim Meet in a different country. There are also lots of other Masters Games staged all over the place which you can head for.

Other Stuff We Do!

Open Water Swimming

Lots of members like to take part in the Open Water Swim season each summer. Most of these events are organised outside the Masters Swimming umbrella and you enter as an individual rather than as a club. However, Masters Swimming WA does run a pointscore over the season and has awards for Masters Swimming members who participate in these events. Masters Swimming WA also runs a State Open Water Championship event towards the end of the season and Somerset has been the organising club for this event for several years and we encourage all of our members to participate either by swimming or helping out with the organisation.

During the summer a group of members meets regularly at Port Beach on Saturday mornings at 9:00 for “Beach Training” and members are welcome to participate on the understanding that this is not an official club activity and is not covered by Masters Swimming insurance.

Other Sporting Events

Being active people many members are also active in other sports as well and members can be found in events like Fun Runs, Triathlons, Cycling, Netball, Hockey, the Blackwood River Marathon, the Busselton Iron Man, the Vic Park Croquet Club, the South Perth Bowling Club, etc., etc. – just ask around if you are interested and someone will point you towards another person with your interests.

Family and Families

Somerset sees itself a swimming family. We have our young ’uns and our oldies and all sizes in between. There are lots of couples who both belong to the club and even fathers and sons, grandmothers and granddaughters who swim together. Why not bring your family along to join too? Even if they are too young or non-swimmers your family is always welcome to come along to Somerset events. We always welcome non-swimming volunteers as well (timekeepers, BBQ cookers etc.!!)

Your Club is run by Volunteers. From the President to the Raffle Coordinator no-one gets paid! Without them there would be no club. Treat them kindly and don’t forget to take your turn to help out when the time comes. It is impossible to put everyone in this publication, but here are a few people you will need to know…

Bathers and Club Uniforms

The club has a Property Officer who is responsible for ordering club clothing and bathers.

Communication with Members

The Committee communicates regularly with members via email. Information emails are sent out to all members by the Secretary after Committee meetings and at other times as required. Committee decisions, upcoming events, news about club achievements and members, and general gossip are communicated.  News on results and past events, usually with pictures, is communicated via the website.  The programs for the Sunday morning club days are also recorded on the website.
