Cook's Corner

I am constantly amazed by the quality (and quantity!) of food that Masters swimmers produce at carnivals, Open Days, meetings and events. This is a space for the recipes of great Seahorse cooks, and is dedicated to those among us who love to cook and love to eat.

Any recipe for food produced by a Seahorse is welcome here and can be submitted by anyone (although please get permission if it’s not yours). It’s likely that your food will turn up on lots of other Somerset occasions!

Our first cook is Julie O’Loughlin. Members probably know that she’s a great coach – but did you know that she was a great cook too? In another life she and husband Peter ran a bed and breakfast in Bridgetown for 7 years, and I’m told that the breakfasts were to die for (special people got dinner too!) Anyway, Julie has been supplying the Sunday and morning coaching crews with delicious baked goods, and she’s given us some of her recipes. Do try them. They can be found here. And there's a recipe for a date and ginger cake that is enough to get me going to training even on very cold mornings here. She recently brought in an apple cake which blew my mind (and my diet!). Try it here

Liz O'Neill is a busy woman. She has five children, a husband and a job and still finds time to swim. She competed in the Rottnest swim this year as one half of the duo "Lizvette" with Yvette Ballard. Despite all this, she has found time to create a family cook book and recently brought in a yummy chocolate slice made with a recipe from the book. If this is the standard of cooking in the O'Neill household, I want to go and stay! Try the recipe here.

You know Murray Corp? He's the guy who writes the funny blogs and paddles when he's not swimming. Turns out he cooks as well! Here are two of his favourite recipes.

Soup, soup, glorious soup .... did you have some at the 1500m swim? Whether you did or not, I know you're going to love some of the recipes. You'll find them here. Special thanks to the cooks who sent them in. Yours not here? It's not too late to send it.

Here by popular request is Scott's recipe for homemade fructose free chocolate. Enjoy!
